Solution:
This article provides information on how to use stores and bins in the Manufacturing module.
Stores and bins can be difficult to use if they are turned on after the Bill of Materials (BOM) records are created. All manufacturing transactions depend on the correct details in the BOM Component Detail screen. These include item number, item location, and quantity required to make one unit of the finished good.
Once stores and bins are in use, the Component Detail screen will also ask for store and bin locations. It is important to populate these fields for each store and bin type component to ensure that the correct store and bin information is passed to Inventory Control. When a manufacturing transaction must be processed, IC uses this information to look for the quantity in the correct location.
One of the challenges in using stores and bins is that the same item may not always be in the same store or bin location. This can be a problem because the Component Detail screen specifies the [ITEM]+[LOCTID]+[STORE]+[BIN] information for only one combination. However, the Search Stores and/or Bins for stock option may be selected in the Production Entry and Work Order System Options setup screens. This will allow the system to first look for quantity in the [LOCTID]+[STORE]+[BIN] specified by the BOM. If the required quantity cannot be found, the ICIQTY table will be searched for the [STORE]+[BIN] that does contain the required quantity and then automatically use that [STORE]+[BIN] for the transaction.
There are a few limitations to this feature:
- The system cannot combine more than one [STORE]+[BIN] location to resolve the required quantity.
- There is no option to manually select which [STORE]+[BIN] to use once the required quantity is not found in the default [STORE]+[BIN].
- The modules know only that an item is a store or bin type item if there is a value stored in the [STORE]+[BIN] field for the component. This can be any value; it does not have to be a valid [STORE]+[BIN] location.
