Why Does a Bill of Material Set to Explode on SO Shipment Not Create Allocations for Components?

Questions and Answers

Q: A sales order is created in the Order Entry (OE) module. A Bill of Material (BOM) item, that is set to Explode on SO Shipment, is added to the sales order. However when the order is saved, the system does not create any allocations for the components to be used in conjunction with the Generate Recommended Orders feature.

Important
A BOM item is also known as a finished good item.

A: Sage Pro ERP does not create allocations for the components when the BOM is set to Explode on SO Shipment, this is design. An enhancement request has been entered under PTR 78701.

To better understand the current behavior please review the steps below using the Sage Pro sample company:

  1. In the Inventory Control (IC) module, create an item called “TEST.”
  2. Add it to WH1 but do not add any on hand quantity.
  3. In the Production Entry (PE) module, create a BOM for the item TEST.
  4. In the BOM Header tab, select Explode On SO Shipment and keep all other settings as default.
  5. Add some components to the BOM from inventory. For example, add CABL16-BLK and CABL16-RED.
  6. Click the Finished Good tab.
  7. Verify that  Qty Produced  is set to “1”.
  8. Save the BOM.
  9. In the Order Entry (OE) module, enter an order for TEST with a quantity of “2.”
  10. Save the sales order.
  11. In the IC module, open the Item At Location screen for TEST.
  12. Click the Cost/Usage tab.
  13. The  Alloc, SO has a value of “2.” This field does not have an allocation of “2” for the components.
  14. In the ICILOC.Lwoaloc field, there is a value of “0” for the components and TEST. Only TEST has a value of “2” in the Lsoaloc field.
  15. In the OE module, void the sales order.
  16. Now the ICILOC.Lsoaloc field has a value of zero for TEST is now back to zero. The component items were not affected by the transaction.

Other BOM Options

  • Kit during SO Entry – creates OE allocations for the components, not finished goods, if the option to Kit Item is selected when the finished good is added to the sales order.
  • Generate WO on SO Shipment – create OE allocation for the finished good and WO allocations for the components and finished good if the option to Create WO is selected when the finished good is added to the sales order.
