Why Does the Bill of Material Continue to Explode on Shipment?

Questions and Answers

Q: A Bills of Materials (BOM) has been created for a finished good item from the Bill of Materials Maintenance screen. In the BOM Header tab, the following settings have been selected for this BOM:

  • None
  • Configure During SO Entry

When creating and shipping the sales order for this finished good, the shipment log indicates that the finished good item has exploded. The log displays the following information to complete this shipment:

  • The components of the finished good item being issued out of inventory.
  • The finished good item being received into inventory

This behavior is not normally expected for a finished good item that has a BOM set to None. This article will explain the cause of this behavior.

A: This behavior is part of the design for the Configure during SO Entry BOM setting. If this BOM setting is selected, the finished good item will explode on shipment (same behavior as selecting the Explode on Shipment setting) even if the BOM configuration is set to None.

Important
If the components of the finished good item are not modified during sales order creation, the finished good item will explode down to its components during shipment.
